From Minecraft to conclave, what is most sold at the box office
The film rooms in Mexico and the world, after the resounding change that the pandemic brought with it, are today resistance sites from where the public is invited to recover the taste for the appreciation of the seventh art as an essentially collective experience.
According to data from the Gower Street Analytics firm, box office collection in the world for 2024 was 30.5 billion dollars (MDD), which meant a 10% decrease in global billing compared to 2023, when revenues were reported by 33,900 MDD.
With these two postpania figures, there are the economic income numbers for cinematographic complexes worldwide before the irruption of pandemic and the significant growth of the offer of streaming service platforms.
During 2019, for example, the world box office raised about 42,300 million pesos, which means that between the figures of 2019 and 2024 there was a decrease in the billing of the cinematographic complexes of practically 28 percentage points.
However, for the specific case of Mexico, according to information from the National Chamber of the Film Industry (Canacine), during 2024 national cinemas managed to sell 217 million tickets, which represented a decrease of almost 7 percentage points compared to tickets sold in 2023.
However, the year -on -year billing difference was not so drastic, with only a decrease of 1.7 percentage points (15,378 million pesos in 2024 vs.15,590 million pesos in 2023), most likely damping by the increase in the price of tickets, since the value of a ticket in 2023 was 66,91 pesos, while in 2024 it was 70.8 pesos on average.
Assistance to commercial cinemas complexes in Mexico has also declined dramatically after sanitary impasse. Considering figures shared by Canacine, the decrease in assistance to cinematographic complexes in the country between 2019 and 2024 has been about 40 percentage points.
It is also necessary to consider that in 2024 7,470 commercial cinema rooms operated, which meant a decrease of 2.6 percentage points compared to 2023 in terms of functional rooms.
The Mexican box office
Now, with all this referential framework, the cinematographic rooms have large assistance niches with the premiere of tapes that become a phenomenon and still call large amounts of audiences to the rooms.
This is the case of the film a Minecraft film, produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros., which, since its premiere on April 3, that is, for practically a month, it has not released the first place of the most viewed tapes in commercial rooms in the country.
As soon as the recent weekend, this film based on the popular block of the blocks called practically half a million viewers in the country and accumulated sales, only during the weekend, for 29.9 million pesos, for a total accumulated since its premiere of just over 564 million at the box office.
Another of the most viewed films so far this year is the most recent delivery of the Sagas of Superheroes Captain America: a new world, with an accumulated of almost 337 million pesos.
A little further is the new adaptation in Live Action, which has divided opinions among fans, of the Nieves White Ribbon, of Disney, which has accumulated 182 MDP so far.
In the top of tapes more viewed so far this year are three feature films that achieved important visibility given their nominations in the recent edition of the Oscars. Two of them are animated: Flow (with 144.8 million pesos), the production of Latvia that finally took the statuette in the category of best animated film, and the also nominated memories of a snail (110.2 MDP).
For its part, the film Conclave, led by Edward Berger, with eight nominations from the Hollywood Academy and the Oscar by adapted script, convened, so far, considering that there are cinemas that still project it, almost one million people for an accumulated in revenue of almost 84.3 million pesos.
The prolonged projection of the conclave tape coincides with the global interest in the election process of who will be the new leader of the World Catholic Church, after the death of Pope Francis, on April 21.
