The Veracruz Wax Museum, one of the most popular spaces in the country in this category, recently presented its new figure: a statue of Colombian singer Shakira. The sculpture, thought of as a tribute to the artistic trajectory of the interpreter of “Waka Waka”, has generated a wave of reactions in social networks, not all favorable.
The figure, which seeks to join the more than 150 that integrates the 14 rooms of the museum, aroused criticism among the followers of the Barranquilla, who consider that they do not faithfully represent their image or their characteristic charism. Some comments on social networks even compare it with its imitator “Shakibecca”, which has intensified the controversy.
The museum, which already has figures from great icons such as Celia Cruz, Pedro Infante, Bad Bunny, Elton John and Lady Gaga, tried with this new addition to pay tribute to one of the most influential artists in Latin America. However, the result has generated divided opinions. While some celebrate the inclusion of a Colombian artist in this Mexican cultural space, others consider that representation lacks fidelity and detail.
This is not the first time that Shakira is immortalized in wax. In 2023, he became the first Colombian to be part of the prestigious Madame Tussauds museum in London, with a figure that was widely praised by his realism.
Although the statue of Veracruz has received harsh criticism, it has also served to open conversations about the artistic representation and the demand of the public regarding visual tributes to contemporary figures. A sample of how popular art, even in its most commercial forms, can become a point of cultural discussion.
