Women lead Spotify and bend their prominence

The music industry has been mostly dominated by male voices, and this is not a surprise. But times have changed, and the figures are also: women are marking the territory. According to the latest report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), female artists have doubled their representation among the most listened to songs on digital platforms. If in 2017 they barely represented 16% of the global top, today they star in about 30% of the most listened to songs throughout the world.

Latin music sweeps!

Like any transformation, it has not been something homogeneous. There are music genres that have managed to position themselves more strongly than others in terms of female voices. For example, Latin music and R&B are the genres where this change was felt with everything. Latin music – transitionally dominated by men – is living a historical transformation: today, women represent 88% of the most reproduced songs in this genre. And, who has not yet heard the Sharika wolf say “women no longer cry, women invoice”!

English is also fashionable

Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande They could not stay in the last row of the show. They are the most listened to artists in the world, each with their unique style and their unstoppable creativity. With millions of listeners, they have redefined the codes of success in the music industry, leaving the R&B very well stopped: the percentage reaches 70%, confirming that the female voice is the great protagonist of the global lists. Yes, the Swifties They are conquering the world.

Where the boys echo still sounds

However, these achievements are not uniform in all genres. In rock, electronic or classic music, the gender gap remains significant. Even in Latin music such as bachata or reggaeton, the path to equitable representation advances at another pace: women barely reach 10% and 15% of reproductions, respectively.

These small, but existing percentages do not demotivate women. Beyond numbers, its growth in music reflects pure leadership, innovation, empowerment and commitment. They not only appear on the lists, they are writing the rules of music. So now, to listen to more female voices.
