The official portraits of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, and his vice president, JD Vance, have been published before their inauguration next Monday.
Both Trump and Vance appear in the photo wearing blue suits, white shirts and blue ties.
Trump wears a small American flag brooch on his lapel.
Trump’s expression contrasts with Vance’s.
The president-elect appears with his head tilted slightly downward, one eyebrow raised and lips pursed, while Vance smiles at the camera, arms crossed, in a more relaxed pose.
Trump’s new image has drawn comparisons to the 2023 mugshot, which was taken of him at the Fulton County Jail in the state of Georgia, after he was accused of trying to overturn the result of the 2020 election, which he lost. before Joe Biden. Trump has denied the charge.
The famous image was used by Trump to raise funds for his election campaign.
The press team of the presidential duo stated in a press release that the portraits “are shocking.”
The portrait Trump chose this time differs markedly from the image used in 2017, when he first took office.
Although he dresses similarly, in the above portrait he smiles broadly at the camera.
“Trump may be adopting a defiant image, turning what was a moment of legal adversity into a symbol of resilience and strength,” Quardricos Driskell, professor of political science at George Washington University, told the BBC.
“The stark contrast to his previous portrayal, which was more traditional, could also be interpreted as a change in his public persona, in which he wants to emphasize a tougher, more combative stance as he prepares to take office for the second time.”
The portraits were released by Trump’s transition team just days before Trump and Vance’s inauguration on January 20.
Following the 2016 presidential election, official portraits of Trump and his former Vice President Mike Pence were not released until nine months after they were both sworn in.
