Naked veto on Cannes’s red carpet

Tuesday, May 13, 2025, 16:53
The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival begins with a prohibition: the nudes on the red carpet. The organization is not willing to repeat the images that went around the world in preceding years, such as the one starred last year by Bella Hadid, an American model who wore a dress with a completely transparent tulle of waist up. The contest issues this new veto a few hours from an event that congregates the spotlights of the entire planet, “according to the institutional framework of the event and French legislation.” In all preceding editions they had been more lax in their fulfillment.
“Nudity is prohibited in the red carpet, as well as in any other festival area.” This is the new precept of the Cannes Festival around its clothing policy. The message is addressed mainly to the actresses and models that will pass through the red carpet. The parade of transparent dresses or the so -called ‘Naked Dress’ has been a constant in Cannes, a claim also for cameras and communication agencies.

The shocking looks of the stars in the Grand Théâtre Lumière even generate more worldwide expectation than the films that are presented to the Cinematographic Festival, one of the most important in the world. Therefore, this decision to prohibit nudes from this Tuesday, May 13 to Saturday 24, when the contest concludes, has undoubtedly shaken the fashion world. It remains to be seen how the protagonists will react, if they will attend to this warning and respect the prohibition or seek ways to mock it. Nor are bulky dresses admit, another parallel trend, although it seems paradoxical.

The fashion of the ‘Naked Dress’ forced the designers to sublimize their art to create dresses like the one who wore the interpreter Kendall Jenner in 2019: white, of nuptial and extremely transparent inspiration. Or a year earlier, but in this case with an elegant green clothing. They would not pass the filter of the current prohibition. Nor that of Eva Longoria in 2023. You also want to avoid an episode similar to that starring Bianca Censori in this year’s Grammy Awards.
The Cannes Festival opens this Tuesday with the delivery of an honorary palm for actor Robert De Niro, in an antibelicist and claim climate, with an open letter of condemnation of Israeli attacks in Gaza and an inaugural day dedicated to Ukraine. It is emerging as a very focused on cultural diversity, author cinema and commitment to social issues.
