Eurovision | Leroy Sánchez, composer of ‘Slomo’, takes a record: “It is not impossible to compose a song to Beyonce”

Leroy Sánchez premieres disc. ‘Sorry for the chaos’ with 12 songs in English. Yes, of Vitoria but in English. And his explanation is simple: when he began to be known on YouTube through Covers, he always sang in English, so his more than 4 million followers listen to him in English. Leroy went viral to sing ‘Halo’, Beyoncé’s mythical song. A producer took it to Los Angeles and there began to live for and for music. He was involved in a series of contracts, of which it cost him to part, and in the end he managed to fly alone. Not only sing, composes. And he has done it for the best singers in Spain. He is the creator of ‘Slomo’, the song with which Chanel triumphed in Eurovision. He has also composed of Blas Cantó, Malú or Antonio José, among others. An artist you must discover.
-I told me that he did not like to play football and at recess they played ‘Operation Triunfo’ and there his music teacher discovered, through his teammates, who sang well. That evolved for one day to record a cover on YouTube … How was it?
-When YouTube arrived in our lives, in 2005-2006, I kept singing, through YouTube I started seeing people in their room singing songs. It seemed incredible to see a person from anywhere in the world singing and I was in Spain seeing them. I even commented and said: “Hey, what a guay.” I was curious and I said and if I do this, I was curious to know what people thought, how I sing, if the people who saw me were going to like it. The first video I uploaded was a school’s performance that was a potato, was a duet with a school girl. The next video that I published I uploaded it in my room, I was almost without light, I was dreadful to expose me, I sang with my guitar. And the first comment arrived, and then another, and ten more visits. And that slowly began to grow and became what led me to start in music.
-What is the song or version that made him take off?
-The who took off was Beyoncé’s ‘halo’. There were 100,000 visits, madness at the time. They did a lot of interviews for it. A US producer found me on YouTube, it was the time when Justin Bieber was the most. All producers were looking for their Justin Bieber. And he found me in Spain. He told me: “Come to the United States for a week and we tried to see what this is going on and we tried luck.” And I went with my father for a week to Florida. It was a week of madness. I arrived and in the studies I met Shakira. The next day I met Pitbull and David Guetta, then Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child. It was like “Wow, Wow, Wow. This is what I want. I want to be in this industry.” And I ended up moving to the United States. Of this already 14 years ago.

-How has the Leroy evolved that started at now?
-That was the first step that I took to enter the industry, but it was very young. I signed contracts that I didn’t have to have signed and did not know what I was signing. And in a way I trapped myself in an industry that is very brutal and cost me many years to get out of those contracts, some even nine years. I spent a lot of time locked in a prison of contracts that did not allow me to get my own music because I have always composed in addition to making videos on YouTube, I had my mother’s guitar and composed my songs and such. When I was in the United States I learned to compose in English, but being with this record I could not get my music. They own my music. I was caught and fought for a long time after realizing the horrible contracts I had signed, that the people I had signed had no interest in doing anything with me. It was a long time to fight until I finally left everything. It was between 2017 and 2018, I became an independent artist and that is where I really started my career as an artist and learned based on blows, to realize that I fell into a horrible situation and I had to leave somehow with the twenty -five years I had.

-And his composer’s facet also had blocked. How do you evolve to write songs to the main artists? It is not easy to get into the skin that you are going to sing.
-No, totally. The composition facet has always been part of me because you need to compose as an artist. The composing for other artists came from that I could not get my own songs, so I said: “Of course I need to continue composing and living. Composed a lot in English, I moved to Los Angeles, I also went to Miami a lot and there I began to infiltrate the Spanish market. And I like it. It’s another challenge. When an artist needs a song X, I put on his skin, what does he need to say?
Composing for other artists came from that I couldn’t get my own songs ”

-Does artists choose you or you choose them?
-Depers of the situation, there are times for artists to choose me and there are times that the song almost chooses the artist. I have songs that I think they fit ‘X’ or ‘Z’. I pursue them, if I think the song is going to fit them, I can find a way to get to their surroundings.
-What song was the first one?
-Blas song was intermediate, let’s say. It was the one who made myself known in Spain. ‘He is not me,’ it was the song. This topic was a very special topic. I was composed first in English, it was through the connections that I had in Miami that they were looking for pop songs, they told me, for an artist in Spain who just left a group called Auryn and was starting his solo career. Through contacts they found the subject and asked me: “Hey, do this subject block you for this artist? Do you think I recorded it?” And I gave the approval. When he recorded and listened to him, he flew my head. Vocally I am very demanding and when I make demos, they are usually quite complicated to sing, because it’s like singing and I like to sing like that. And Blas is a vocalist. When I heard that demo sung by Blas, I said: “This is very perfect.” I seemed incredible the way he did everything. The theme hit her super hard and it was …
-It’s an old theme …
-Yes, good!
-Was I thought that ‘Slow Mo’, Chanel’s song for Eurovision, that you composed, would get so far?
-That theme, when I was on my hard drive, I knew there was something and in fact I kept it very carefully until the opportunity was what it was as it was. I had it very much for me, saying I knew I had to enter for the right artist at the right time.
I was very careful ‘Slow Mo’, I knew I had to enter for the right artist ”

-And what does Chanel have?
-Hhanel has an artist gen, it has the star, it is very talented. We all saw it.
-Who would you like to compose a song?
-I would love a song for Beyoncé.
-It would gain the circle. With a cover of his he made himself known and if he makes a song it would be like the perfect path.
-Joder, yes, would close a circle. Let’s say it is not impossible. I know people, I have contacts … I know they are composing and I know who is composing. And in fact, when we return to the United States we have pending sessions. I have that hope of … imagine. I would give me something. A loan in a Beyoncé song, which is usually 10 or 20 people. But you are there. It would be amazing.
-What have social networks give you?
-My my head, headaches. No, social networks have given me a career, I come from YouTube, if it weren’t for YouTube I would not have a race, so they have given me a platform, they have given me an audience, they have given me the opportunity to do what I do, to follow my passion and present an album a Spanish of Vitoria, with 12 songs in English.
Social networks have given me a race, I come from YouTube “
Leroy Sánchez
-Do you think in English?
-There is a reason for the album to be in English, it is not because it is flipped. I have been in the United States for 14 years, my passion for music and that hitch came with my obsession with the radio. With Los40 I discovered themes of Rihanna, from Maroon 5, of all these numbers one that came from the United States and England mostly. His way of singing and everything was in English. I sang the songs without knowing which pussy was singing, because I didn’t speak English. And I started buying the records, to consume that music. And then it was what I sang, it is what I learned and what I began to climb to YouTube. When I started uploading those videos, I unconsciously, without knowing it, I began to create an audience that consumed the same, consumed music in English. I tried to get music in Spanish, but it didn’t work for me, because my audience didn’t listen to that, my audience listened to music in English. It was the public who really took me along that path. And I also believe that a part of me wants or has that thing of, I am from Vitoria, of a small town, a neighborhood of Avechuco, of 3,000 inhabitants, a very small place. I have grown with the idea of ”You are not as good as those of the center, you are not as good as those of Madrid.” You know, that subconscious. In Spain we always had that thing that the Spaniards do not speak as well English as the Swedes or as the Germans. And look I had that thorn of “I shit in milk, I want to be a half -of -nothing Spanish, that sing in English, that speaks in English, that infiltrates the market and that is capable of competing with those who are making numbers some for everyone.” I have that thing to want to do it and want to try the world what can be done.

-It’s a very good challenge.
-So has been the elaboration of this album. It has been a process of many things. This album is a bit testament of that challenge and also from another 18 -year personal challenge since I uploaded my first video to YouTube, finally having my solidified team and having the appropriate people to put an entire album in their place, to be able to promote it in the way it deserves, to give noise …
-He tell me all this and notice would never see him in Eurovision and yet you have two compositions in Eurovision. I am hallucina how it is …

-I have a pop DNA at the end, which comes from consuming the top 40 that are all those issues. I am chameleonic in the sense that in the end it is all pop. I learned it from making it. And that is DNA. If you can gut it a song and play it with a guitar, with a piano, that is. And that is my essence. And with Eurovision themes, they are issues for other artists, that is the angle that I give. In the end, I start from that base. Eurovision in the end is a very homogeneous audience in the sense that it is very general. of different cultures that try to integrate their culture at the same time, but you also have to get to them. You have to have that general pop DNA, which is what the radio has.
