Why does Trump appear so serious in his official portrait?

Billionaire entrepreneurs from the technology sector, company executives and stars like Carrie Underwood are heading to Washington to entertain Donald Trump. There has been such a stampede of big-money donors that his inaugural committee has been left without VIP tickets and benefits. And yet, here is the president-elect, looking very stern in the official portrait his advisers released Thursday before his inauguration.

The portrait, which will appear printed on the programs that his followers will wield on Monday morning, does not exactly look festive. Trump appears squinting severely, bathed from below in a disturbing Lynchian lighting, with powerful spotlights reflected in his eyes. An entertainment photographer said the lighting and technique are reminiscent of the controversial photo series End of timesby photographer Jill Greenberg, composed of crying children.

While other men at the top of the presidency have offered bland, smiling inaugural images, the photo revealed Thursday was — like everything else related to Trump — dramatic and disconcerting. It’s certainly reminiscent of the determined pose he struck for his 2024 mugshot, taken at the Fulton County, Georgia, sheriff’s office in that state’s election intervention case.

When asked to interpret the president-elect’s expression in his inauguration photo, his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, responded: “America. This. Back”.
