It would have been much easier to simply characterize Kurt and Charlotte as inherently idiosyncratic people who have no higher goals, but overnight hints that they’ve invited Alex and Emily to hang out with them to serve a greater purpose. The film is also able to make Alex and Emily very relatable, as the viewer is only exposed to the same amount of information as they are. Scott and Schilling are fantastic giving very reactive performances; can capture the hilarity, confusion, anger, and helplessness that this struggling couple faces as they confront the various mysteries at play.

‘The In a Single Day’ is a surprisingly serious examination of marriage

Although it is a film that at times becomes surprisingly obscene, overnight does a great job examining the struggles of a long marriage. While Alex and Emily still love each other deeply, the stress of raising a child means they have less time to spend together and have begun to lose sight of the passion that made them fall in love with each other in the first place. Attending a wild evening with their quirky neighbors can be a stressful situation, but it allows Alex and Emily to remember how close they are when it comes to values. It is one of the few films that acknowledges that marriage can be challenging but maintains that staying together is worth it.

While he had proven that he could be a compelling romantic lead due to his recurring role on Parks and RecreationScott showed maturity in his sensitivity to overnightwhich offered a preview of the most serious performance he was capable of in Rupture. Schwartzman can always be relied on to play eccentric supporting characters, but overnight it allowed him to portray a deeper feeling of insecurity and self-hatred. Given the limited scope of overnight It was thanks to the excellent performances that the film managed to be so attractive.
