In the metal few bands manage to offer a unique approach and with deep connection with spirituality and nature. Auraether, led by Hans Enjoit, is one of those rare exceptions. Founded in 2018 after a transformative trip to Raminging, Australia, the band has managed to capture the essence of natural beauty and ancestral wisdom in their music. This trip not only marked the birth of Auraether, but also deeply influenced the artistic and spiritual direction of the project.
Auraether’s music is not simply a collection of songs; It is a deep exploration of issues such as environmental degradation, internal conflict and the search for meaning in a constant change.
Through his letters, Hans enjoys the turbulence of modern existence, addressing cyclical struggles in “Life as Whirlpool” to personal battles in “Phoenix” and “am i a saboteur?”.
Each song is a narrative of self -discovery and resistance, resonating at the spiritual level with the listeners and offering a shelter in the middle of chaos.
In 2023, Auraether expanded his sound horizons with the inclusion of powerful drum elements and guitar on his debut album. In 2024, the band continued to evolve with singles such as “Origins” and “Phoenix”, which reflect a unique mixture of melody and spiritual essence. In this interview, Hans takes us through his musical trip, his inspirations and what the future holds for Auraether.
What is the meaning of the band’s name?
Auraether is a combination of two powerful concepts: ‘Aura’, which represents the energy or essence that surrounds each person, and ‘Ether’, the intangible space that connects everything in the universe. The aura, in particular, has a special quality: it can be channeled more easily by some people, allowing them to connect deeply with the emotional or energy density of certain spaces, places or even other people along their way. This name reflects the way in which I perceive music, as a means to explore deep and transcendental connections.
How would you describe Auraether?
Auraether is a personal path that I now share with others, a space to connect with the essence of things, with the anti-everyday and the divine. It is my way of exploring and expressing what goes beyond the visible or common, always seeking to create something that resonates with the emotions and spirituality of those who experience it.
Why did you want to make ‘spiritual metal’?
I have decided to classify my music as ‘spiritual metal’ due to the diversity of concepts that I explode and the lack of a specific classification within the metal that covers what Auraether represents. Beyond pigeing in a traditional genre or sub-gender, I prefer to focus on the ‘core’ that guides my compositions and creative motivation.
My interest in this style arises from a deep desire to explore music that is not only powerful and emotionally intense, but also connects with the transcendental and spiritual. Metal has a unique ability to express feelings of struggle, chaos and strength, and when combining it with spiritual elements, I seek to create an experience that transcends the physical. I want to invite reflection, to the connection with the deep being, and the exploration of emotions and energies that often cannot be expressed otherwise.
Where do ideas for riffs and letters come from?
The ideas for the riffs and the lyrics of Auraetter come from personal experiences and my connection with the surrounding environment. I have found inspiration in moments of introspection, trips to significant places, and also in the history and cultures that I explode. Music is my way of channeling those experiences and emotions, transforming them into something that others can feel and connect.
What are the pros and cons of music in a country different from the one that you were born and with a different culture?
Among the cons, the most challenging thing is to find musicians who share my vision or who have lived similar experiences, something essential for a correlation in musical creation. Until now, Auraether does not have a definitive training, and although I seek to connect with musicians to collaborate in the composition, I feel that finding people with the same perspective remains my greatest challenge. On the other hand, strengths are significant. Working in different environments allows me to create more unique and deeply connected music with my being. In addition, living in a country like China, with its rich history and cultural diversity, has given me access to sounds and stories that inspire and enrich my creative process. However, I always return to my homeland to consolidate ideas and maintain a global vision.
What are the artists who influenced you?
As for international artists, it would be impossible to list all the bands that have influenced me because I would leave many out, but I should highlight someone, I would say Dimebag Darrell. His energy, the strength of his riffs and his exquisite technique left a very strong impression on me and in my way of boarding the guitar. In the local environment, speaking of Chile, definitely back. He has always impressed his innovation in the compositions, in addition to how easy it was to connect with his songs.
What comes for the future of Auraether?
For the future of Auraether, I have already started with the planning of the second album, which will probably be named ‘Pathos’. This new project will seek to deepen even more in the emotional and spiritual connection that characterizes my music. On the other hand, although I continue working with session musicians, my priority remains to find a definitive training that shares my vision. This is essential to be able to make the first tour and promote ‘Forth, Mother Earth’, taking these songs to the stage and connecting directly to the audience.
What does music mean in your life?
Music for me is a tool to capture frequencies that resonate deeply with the soul. Through each musical creation, I have the opportunity to focus a goal, either to express something personal or to transmit a message that can benefit or connect with the community. It is a way to channel emotions, thoughts and energies, creating something that goes beyond the individual, always looking for a bigger impact.
