“Today I make a respectful but urgent call to the Government of Puerto Rico to join the federal lawsuit led by several states that reject this measure and its serious implications on human rights. “It is time to unite in a firm and loud demand against this public policy that is being implemented in a haphazard and discriminatory manner,” said the popular leader in written statements.
“This executive action represents a direct attack on a fundamental principle enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which clearly states that every person born or naturalized in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction is a citizen.” of the United States. This amendment has been a pillar of the principle of equality and inclusion in American society. “It must continue like this.”, indicated the legislator.
“In Puerto Rico, the repercussions of this order can have a significant impact on immigrant communities, especially on Dominican brothers who are part of the Puerto Rican family. “American citizenship is an essential right for everyone born on American soil, and any attempt to limit this right represents a direct abandonment of the democratic values we share.”
Torres maintained that the lawsuit initially filed by 18 states – which have been joined by another six – is not only a defense of the Constitution, but also a fight for justice and dignity of the most vulnerable communities.
“The government of Puerto Rico must raise its voice in solidarity with those affected and the organizations that are leading this effort. I request the governor of Puerto Rico and the Secretary of Justice to take immediate action to unite us in this important litigation,” the popular legislator finally stated.
