Social Security: how immigrants can collect benefits | United States | M.A.G.

The migrants in USA They now have the ability to receive Social Security benefits. Through the Social Security Administration (SSA), the North American government has just implemented certain conditions that allow immigrants to access this program, under specific conditions. One of these is the so-called ‘seven-year rule’, focused on those who have not worked in the country, but meet the stipulated criteria.

The ‘seven-year rule’ allows certain immigrants to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for up to seven years. This government-funded program does not require having previously contributed to Social Security through work.
However, applicants must meet immigration classifications approved by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other specific legal conditions.
DHS ELIGIBLE CLASSIFICATIONS
- Legal permanent resident.
- Person with conditional entry or granted asylum.
- Refugee admitted to the country.
- People on parole in the USA.
- Cuban or Haitian starters.
- Afghan or Iraqi special immigrants.
- Temporary humanitarian permit holders (Ukrainians or Afghans).
- Victims of human trafficking or Native Americans born in Canada.
Along those same lines, to receive the SSI benefit, at least one of the following stipulations must be met:
- Be legally present in the United States since August 22, 1996 and have a visual impairment or a developmental condition.
- Have received SSI payments before that date.
- Have 40 work credits in the United States.
- Be a retired veteran, active member of the Armed Forces, or immediate family member of one of this group.
