The posters are recognizable instantly, a habitual element in the showcases around the world every time the Shenic arts show Shen Yun arrives in the city. With graceful dancers dressed in undulating costumes, the ads promise a look at “China before communism.”

The show is one of the most visible parts of the Falun Gong spiritual movement, whose history of three decades includes a brutal repression in China, complaints that their members were extracted organs and a transnational repression campaign that continues to this day .

On Friday, The New York Times reported that Shen Yun’s young artists have regularly submitted emotional abuses and manipulation.

Since its introduction in China about 30 years ago, the Falun Gong has gained adherents worldwide, including Chinese immigrants and non -Chinese practitioners. They have exalted the benefits of their health meditation exercises.

It is difficult to obtain precise estimates of the number of Falun Gong followers because the movement does not have a formal affiliation system. The Falun Gong press department states that it has followers in more than 100 countries, including about 10,000 living in the United States.
