A fast -movement winter storm with a dangerous combination of snow, aguanieve and ice moves through the west of the US in the morning.
Almost 90 million people from the west to the northeast are under winter alert, according to the American National Meteorological Service. The storm can cause dangerous traffic conditions and interruptions of the electricity supply.
The storm will produce “dangerous trips due to low visibility, snow -covered roads. It is possible that cuts of electricity and minor damage in trees occur in places where ice is more intense, ”warns the weather service.
For Saturday night they are expected up to 20 centimeters of snow in some areas of the upper part of the great lakes. As the storm progresses east until Sunday morning, the north of the state of New York and the south of New England could see up to 30 centimeters of snow. Meanwhile, a winter mixture of snow, aguanieve and icy rain is expected from the Ohio Valley to the north of the middle Atlantic, with slight ice accumulations.
“This storm could create dangerous travel conditions with a visibility close to zero at some times,” the New York Governor Kathy Hochul warned on Friday by declaring the state of emergency. The governor activated emergency protocols, including accelerated salt delivery, and eliminated the work hours of truckers to accelerate the treatment of roads.
The storm system is moving in two rounds: the first will bring strong snowfall to the west medium on Saturday afternoon, followed by important snowfalls in parts of the northeast, along with ice conditions in the Appalaches.
Multiple meteorological systems will affect Northeast during the next 72 hours, according to the Northeast Fluvial Prediction Center (NWS). Temperatures below normal are probable in much of the US continental for the coming weeks, the agency said. This combination of prolonged active and cold time can bring a continuous section of winter interruptions for many Americans.
Here are the main impacts in cities, from Saturday afternoon:
-Green Bay, Wisconsin: Winter storm warning until 9 pm on Saturday, 10 to 20 centimeters of snow is expected.
-Chicago: Winter time warning until 7 pm on Saturday, frost llovizna accumulates up to 0.25 centimeters.
-Cleveland, Ohio: Mixed rainfall is expected, with up to 2.5 centimeters of snow and aguanieve, and up to 0.5 centimeters of ice accumulated from 1 PM on Saturday to 1 AM on Sunday.
-Washington: Winter time warning until 7 pm on Saturday, mixed rainfall with up to 2.5 centimeters of snow and aguanieve is expected.
-Filadelfia: Winter weather notice from noon on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday, with a probability that snow becomes a mixture of rain and aguanieve after midnight.
-New York: 7 to 12 centimeters of snow and aguanieve are expected from 6 pm on Saturday.
-Boston: Winter storm warning from 10 pm on Saturday, with 10 to 17 centimeters of snow.
The storm coincides with the weekend of the Super Bowl, which could complicate the travel plans of the fans who go to New Orleans. The airports of important centers such as Chicago, Detroit and Boston prepare for delays and cancellations due to snow and ice during the weekend.
The weather service warned this Saturday that the dense fog near Louisiana airports could complicate the arrival of fans traveling to New Orleans for Sunday’s game. But those in The Big Easy celebrating the football holidays will enjoy a temperate time, with maxims of about 27 ° C.
Two more systems are on the horizon for next week, with another Ráfaga of the Arctic that is expected to push the temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees below the usual ones in the northeast. Meteorologists attribute this active pattern to the positioning of the stream in jet, which is channeling the storms through the northern US.
The stream current, essentially a river of air in the atmosphere through which the storms flow, is blocked in an almost perfect line from west to east, and will continue to channel rapid movement storms through the north of the 48 states.
This pattern has been responsible for the maintenance of temperatures lower than the average in much of the country this winter. New storms are expected to arrive every few days until the stream current changes, something that may not happen until the second half of February.
The storms of this weekend are only part of what meteorologists expect it to be an active February in terms of winter climate.
