The name change has generated a strong controversy, especially in Mexico, where the Government expressed its rejection of this decision.
Google reported that the Mexican government sent a letter to the company’s executive director, SUCTORY PICHAI, requesting that what they qualified as an error in the denomination of the area be corrected. In the letter, the Mexican authorities asked that the original name of the Gulf be respected, arguing that the change could generate confusion and diplomatic tensions.
