The actor’s mother, Shelley Sykes, said in an interview with the KTLA network that the events precipitated after they could not put out the flames that had begun to burn the cabin they were in due to a lack of water.
“I went to the top of his cabin, turned on the hose and no water came out. “I ran downstairs and called 911, but the phone wasn’t working and all the emergency lines were down,” she said of her desperation to save her son.
The situation got out of control, but Rory did not want to leave her home. Because he had mobility problems, he couldn’t get around alone: when his mother went to get help, it was already too late.
“He said, ‘Mom, leave me’ and no mother can leave her child. I have a broken arm, I couldn’t lift it, I couldn’t move it,” Shelley commented, reviewing the tragic fire. The young man locked himself in and the woman went out desperate to look for help. When the firefighters returned with her, the property was destroyed and the actor had died: the fire had destroyed everything.
