IRS announces new deadline to file tax returns
He Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended the deadline for filing tax returns in certain regions of the United States affected by natural disasters. Initially scheduled for February 3, 2025, the new deadline will be May 1, 2025, giving almost three additional months to taxpayers in areas designated as disaster zones.
IRS: Why is this extension granted?
The IRS made this decision in response to climate events that severely impacted several regions in 2024, such as hurricanes, fires forestry and storms extreme.
According to the agency, this measure seeks to provide relief fiscal to affected residents and businesses.
The extension automatically applies to taxpayers whose registered address is located in the areas declared as disaster areas by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Taxpayers residing in the following states and territories will have more time to file their forms and make any outstanding payments.
- Parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia
In these regions, May 1, 2025 will also be the deadline to pay off accumulated tax debts.

On the other hand, taxpayers from the following states must comply with the original deadline.
- Parts of Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington

IRS: special help for taxpayers affected by international conflicts
In addition to areas affected by natural disasters, the IRS announced a special extension for taxpayers who reside or have businesses in Israel, Loop either West Bankdue to the war conflicts in those regions. In this case, the deadline to file and pay taxes will be September 30, 2025.
The IRS is also offering additional support for those who were outside declared disaster areas but qualify for tax relief. In these cases, taxpayers must contact the agency directly at 866-562-5227 to request an extension.
This includes workers affiliated with recognized government organizations that participated in relief activities in affected areas.
