After fighting for a mansion, they propose law against abuse … and they call it law Katy Perry | MORELOS DIARIO

The so -called Katy Perry law, officially known as Protecting Elder Realty For Retirement Years Act (Perry), was a proposal promoted in 2023 by US state legislators to protect older adults in processes of property sale. Although it was not discussed at the federal level, it gained notoriety after involving singer Katy Perry in a controversial legal case for the acquisition of a mansion in California.

The case that detonated this proposal was that of Carl Westcott, an 85 -year -old businessman diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. In 2020, shortly after greater surgery and under opioid treatment, he signed the sale of his property to Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom for 15 million dollars. The Westcott’s family argued that it was not in mental conditions to make decisions, but a judge concluded in 2023 that the sale was valid, and Perry officially registered the property in 2024.

The law initiative proposed a 72 -hour reflection period to cancel sales contracts in which any of the parties had more than 75 years, as a measure to avoid abuse or fraud. He also sought to protect people with cognitive deterioration or under medical treatment, offering legal tools to stop hurried agreements and avoid manipulations.

It was not the first time that Perry looked wrapped in a real estate dispute with older adults. In 2013, he tried to acquire a convent in Los Angeles inhabited by old nuns. Although he obtained support from the archdiocese, the religious opposed publicly, and the case resulted in a litigation. During an audience in 2018, one of the nuns collapsed and died, which intensified the media controversy.

The so -called “Katy Perry” law was not discussed in Congress, but was promoted as a citizen proposal. Although the official website was withdrawn, a request on Change.org still remains active. Their drivers cited that in 2020 more than 93 thousand older adults denounced financial fraud, with losses for more than 500 million dollars. So far, Katy Perry has not issued public comments on the initiative that bears his name.
