Alternative therapies in networks: spirituality and holistic well-being

KArla Barajaswriter and content creatorhas been promoting for years spirituality and holistic well-being. For the young woman originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, these practices are key to promote self-knowledgeachieve inner peace and create a harmonious relationship with the environment and people.

On her social networks, Karla highlights techniques such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Tapping, a technique whose purpose is emotional liberation, but do these tools replace professional therapy and are they well received by users?

In an accelerated world full of adversities, a trend or philosophy of life emerges: “slow living,” an approach that advocates slowing down the frenetic pace to which we are accustomed. According to the Therapyside site, one of its most significant aspects is its ability to reduce anxiety.

The movement has its roots in the book Praise of slowness, by Carl Honoré, published in 2004, which inspired numerous authors, artists and content creators to embrace and spread this way of living. Although Karla does not mention the term “slow living” in an interview with Newsweek in Spanishtheir goal is also to empower people through mental and spiritual well-being.

Since she was little, Karla Barajas showed a deep interest in the development of consciousness and human well-being. During her adolescence, and being an avid reader, she devoured dozens of spiritual books. This enthusiasm prompted her to train herself through courses, workshops, diplomas and certifications that provided her with extensive knowledge in various techniques and metaphysical currents.

“I COMBINE ELEMENTS OF SELF-HELP, COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH, HOLISTIC WELL-BEING AND SPIRITUALITY”

In 2020 she decided to venture into social media as a content creator in the field of spirituality and holistics. He soon began to gain followers and build a significant presence on these platforms, according to his biography available at Penguin Random House, the publishing house of his books. You deserve more than you think and Demonstration without so much fuss.

“My content combines elements of self-help, holistic health and spirituality. The latter is not necessarily linked to a specific religion, although it can be if the person chooses. Nowadays people adjust it to what gives them a deeper meaning,” he comments.

And he adds to the topic: “I have had the fortune of accompanying more than 1,200 people around the world, in different parts of their process, and all with completely different profiles: mothers, entrepreneurs, single fathers, young people and older adults who are looking for a new direction of your life.”

With more than 640,000 followers on Instagram and 1.7 million on TikTok, the influencer (influencer) adds several videos on tapping, “to help manifest, lose weight with love, release any trauma or limiting or repetitive thoughts.”

According to the Cigna Healthcare site, it is a method that some people use to help control disturbing emotions and thoughts. Likewise, it can help reduce stress and anxiety.

IT DOES NOT SUBSTITUTE THERAPY

It consists of tapping with the fingertips on certain points of the hand, head and torso. The tapping points are similar to those used in acupuncture. In addition, other recurring content on their networks is about how to build an ideal home, foster healthy relationships or say goodbye to imposter syndrome (a psychological experience that leads people, especially women in professional or academic environments, to feel that they do not deserve their achievements).

According to the Ministry of Health, in Mexico 19.3 percent of the adult population suffers from severe anxiety symptoms and more than 30 percent present them in a mild or moderate form. Given this scenario, does the content you generate contribute to mitigating this emotional state? —we ask.

—My programs and accompaniment are 100 percent spiritual and you will not hear me say that doctors or vaccines are not important. I am not a psychologist and my programs are not intended to replace your therapy. From the first minute I will tell you not to leave your professional service.

“We have a committee of researchers that helps us create the content. For example, if I am going to record a ‘Fear of Rejection’ video, and although I can generate tapping or meditation material, psychology has its explanation. Thus, the psychologist on our team offers us the information and the bases to speak about it in a clear and friendly way to the public,” he adds to the medium.

A COMMITTEE OF INVESTIGATORS

In the words of the also podcaster (podcast author), her committee is made up of members of the National System of Researchers (SNII), pulmonologists, cardiologists, psychology professionals, among others.

—How would you respond to people’s skepticism about alternative or complementary therapies such as tapping and holistic well-being?

—Our project aims to help people understand that it is possible to create a full and beautiful life. However, we also take care to point out what is good and what is not. For example, in the case of doctors, if they make a mistake, they face consequences such as the loss of their professional license and could go to jail. However, in the field of alternative therapies there is a lack of regulation.

“On one occasion we received messages from women who attended a Reiki (type of energy therapy) session and were asked to undress. These types of practices are not appropriate, so we make sure to guide them appropriately,” concludes Karla Barajas from a video call.

According to Dr. Denise Millstine of the Mayo Clinic, complementary or alternative medicine can be classified according to five main categories of practice: complete medical systems, mind-body techniques (such as meditation), biologically based practices, manipulative therapies, and based therapies. on the body (acupuncture), and energy therapies.
