Being immigrant in the US is living with constant fear.- Shakira

Cd. Of Mexico.- Colombian singer Shakira spoke about her experience as an immigrant living in the United States under the current immigration policies of President Donald Trump.

In an interview with the BBC this weekend, the singer -songwriter was asked what it was to be an immigrant in the US today, especially in the middle of the raids of the customs immigration and control service (ICE).

“Being an immigrant in the US means living with constant fear. And it is painful to see it,” said the 48 -year -old interpreter, who also reflected on how the country has changed since he moved to Miami being a teenager in the mid -1990s. “I was only 19 years old when I moved to the United States, like many other Colombian immigrants who arrive in this country looking for a better future.

To improve its English language management and its understanding of musical work, Shakira explained that he read works by Leonard Cohen, Walt Whitman and Bob Dylan, among many idols. “I did it to understand how the English language works in song composition,” he recalled.

Since he assumed the position earlier this year, President Trump has intensified his efforts to combat the alleged migratory violations. And in recent days, ICE raids have unleashed protests and chaos in the streets of the US. “Now, more than ever, we must remain united. Now, more than ever, we must raise their voice and make it very clear that a country can change its immigration policies, but treatment to all people must always be human,” Shakira said. With these statements, the Colombian joins the growing number of musicians who manifest against federal raids in southern California, such as Olivia Rodrigo, finneas, The Game, Billie Joe Armstrong, Kehlani, Tom Morello and Reneé Rapp.
