Beyoncé beat Messi and Taylor Swift … in tourist impact on Chicago

(Bloomberg) – Beyoncé’s concert in Chicago promoted hotel reserves to a new record, exceeding an earlier record recorded by Lionel Messi when he played with Inter de Miami in the third largest city in the United States.
Travelers reserved 46,450 hotel rooms in Chicago last Saturday, the largest amount recorded in a single day, according to Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism organization. Visitors also went to the National Fair of the Association of Restaurants, which usually attracts more than 50,000 people.

The new record is good news for Chicago, which had had difficulty recovering tourism. While the number of visitors increased 6.5% last year, reaching 55.3 million, it still remains below prepaandemics levels. The city received 61 million tourists in 2019, according to Choose Chicago data.
“It is a very exciting time of the year in Chicago,” said Kristen Reynolds, president of the group, in a statement, referring to summer events, such as the street race of Nascar and Lollapalooza. “We hope to continue with this impulse, promoting economic vitality through visits.”
Last Saturday’s reservations are compared to the previous record of August 31, when a Pearl Jam concert at the Wrigley Field coincided with the Chicago Fire match against Inter Miami at Soldier Field. That day, tourists reserved 46,126 hotel rooms, according to Choose Chicago.
The great concert tours have proven to be very profitable for the city in recent years. The Eras Taylor Swift Tour Tour weekend in 2023 generated an average of 44,383 rooms occupied between Friday and Saturday, marking a record at the time.
