The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, presented a letter sent by the country to Google to challenge the decision of the technological giant to fulfill the order of President Donald Trump, to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico for the Gulf of the United States.

Sheinbaum showed the document at his daily press conference on Thursday. Speaking to journalists, he said: “That is, in the case of Mexico, in which part are we completely sovereign? In that which establishes 12 nautical miles from the coastlines, and this is the same for all countries of the world. If a country wants to change the designation of something at sea, it would only apply up to 12 nautical miles. ”

“It cannot be applied to the rest, in this case, to the Gulf of Mexico. This is what we explain in detail to Google. ”

Referring to a previous counterproposal that made Trump to change the name of the USA, Sheinbaum added: “In the end, we ask that, in the search engine, when ‘Mexican America’ is put on the map we present.” At that time, he showed journalists a map of 1607 that labeled parts of North America such as “Mexican America.”

On Monday, Google announced that Google Maps users in the United States would see the body of water known as the Gulf of Mexico renamed as “Gulf of America.” Google said the change was in line with its “practice of applying changes in name when they have been updated in official government sources.” Users in Mexico will continue to see the name of “Gulf of Mexico” in Google Maps. The rest of the world will see both names.

Trump, in his decree last week, said he ordered that the mass of water will be called “Gulf of America” ​​or “United States Gulf”, “in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance for the economy of our nation and its people. ” The decree requires that all the maps and documents of the federal government reflect the change.
