Codelco Salvador begins archaeological research to decipher the mystery of the “Turquoise Mummy” discovered in 1971

The so-called “Turquoise Mummy” was discovered in 1971 by a Salvadoran family, and then handed over to the authorities of the time, with traces lost until the beginning of the year 2000.

Codelco Salvador will begin studies to determine the origin of the “Turquoise Mummy”

Codelco Salvador, one of the main mining camps in Chile, has announced that it will carry out an investigation to determine the origin and history of the so-called “Turquoise Mummy.” This archaeological discovery, which took place in 1971 on Indio Muerto Hill, has aroused great interest both locally and nationally.

The investigation will be carried out by an outstanding team of specialists, headed by archaeologist Carlos González. Using bioarchaeology techniques, textile analysis and radiocarbon dating, we will seek to determine the origin of this mummy, as well as its lifespan and its cultural group of origin.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to contribute to scientific and heritage research, not only at the local and regional level, but also nationally, in terms of determining who this mummified body, discovered more than half a century ago, belonged to and to what cultural group,” stated Carlos González.

In addition to the analysis of DNA samples and the mummy’s stomach contents, detailed studies will be carried out on the textiles found next to the remains. These analyzes will be key to elucidating the origin and culture to which this individual belonged.

This initiative is a real testimony of how the mining industry joins the scientific world to contribute to the knowledge and history of our native peoples,” said Christian Toutin, general manager of Codelco Salvador.

Since its discovery more than half a century ago, the “Turquoise Mummy” has fascinated archeology experts and the entire community. With this research, we hope to shed light on its origin and its meaning in the history of the native peoples of the region.
