Colombia announced on Monday (01,2025) the takeoff of two military aircraft to the United States to transfer dozens of deported Colombians, after overcoming diplomatic tensions with the Donald Trump government.
The Colombian Air Force aircraft took off from Bogotá to the American city of San Diego and another, Houston, the aerospace force in the Network X reported.
“In the early morning our national territory will arrive. Our aviation will bring them and will arrive without being handcuffed,” said President Gustavo Petro.
The Trump government reversed a series of sanctions on Sunday that planned to impose Colombia after Petro’s refusal to allow military flights with deported migrants.
Bogotá asked for respect for the “dignity” of the deportees
After hours of tension, Bogotá accepted the terms of this Trump policy and turned off a dispute that rose with the passage of the hours. The concern of the Colombian government was respect for the “dignity” of the deportees.
“This provision: dignity for the Deporting, will be put to all the countries that send us deportations, and is supported today by the UN,” the Colombian president insisted on Monday.
On his side, Trump claimed a certain victory this Monday and said that “America is respected again.”
“As they saw yesterday we have made it clear to all the countries that (…) we will send the criminals, the illegal foreigners who come from their countries,” said the president against Republican congressmen in Miami.
“And they will take them back quickly and if they don’t, they will pay a very high economic price, and we will immediately install mass tariffs and other sanctions,” he added.
Trump’s threats to deport hundreds of people face him with the governments of Latin America, where the majority of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States come from.
The Brazilian government summoned on Monday to the business manager of the United States Embassy to ask for explanations about the “denigrating” treatment given to the deportees who arrived on Friday in Brazil.
