The video game fever on the big screen continues, and this time is the turn of the iconic Minecraft world to jump into the cinema with A Minecraft movie (Minecraft Movie, 2025). Following the line of other adaptations such as Sonic, the movie (2020), this production takes the universe of the famous blocks to build a family adventure that spares in humor and adventure.

Jack Black is Steve, a character who is immersed in the peculiar universe of Overworld after the activation of a mysterious magic square. An unexpected turn brings “The Garrison man” Garrison (Momoa), a former Arcade champion with airs of greatness, who along with Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks), fall into this fantasy world. His mission to find the way back becomes a trip full of challenges and funny moments against evil things such as Piglins and Zombies.

One of the successes of the film lies in its ability to laugh at itself and the classic tropes of fantasy stories. The self -conscious humor, added to the intelligent choice of its main cast (Jack Black in Jim Carrey code, aligning with the dolls designed in CGI, and Jason Momoa infantilized in pink suit), make this production an entertaining proposal for the children’s audience. The dynamic between Momoa and Black, provides a very effective chemistry.

The adventures of the characters play with the creativity of the video game. The characters are “creating” structures with cubes to get out of danger situations. In the middle the whole merchandising of the Mojang brand, producer of this film directed by Jared HESS.

Then, follow the classic adventure story structure: the characters reach a fantastic world that is in danger, they release them as good heroes that they are, and then return to their own reality, with celebratory dance included. A narrative structure as old as Moon trip (Le Voyage Dans La Lune, 1902) by George Melies.

Yes ok A Minecraft movie It does not seek to revolutionize the cinema, it demonstrates a clear understanding of its material of origin and how to exploit it to offer a product that fulfills its mission: to provide a pleasant and funny time.
