We have the first look at The Smashing Machine, the new A24 movie starring Dwayne “La Roca” Johnson and Emily Blunt. Away from action cinema and comedy to which he has accustomed us, Johnson now embodies the legendary MMA Mark Kerr fighter, in an intense drama that explores both his triumphs in the ring and his personal conflicts outside of him.
The tape is directed by Benny Safdie (known by UNCut Gems), which already anticipates a raw and emotional tone. The Smashing Machine promises to be a powerful story about addiction, marriage, media pressure and redemption. Emily Blunt plays Kerr’s wife, in what will also be a role full of emotions and tensions.
This project marks an important turn in Johnson’s career, who not only stars but also produces the film. Its physical and emotional transformation for paper has been applauded in networks, and many already speculate that this could be their play to aspire, for the first time, an Oscar.
The Smashing Machine has an official release date for October 3 in the United States, but everything indicates that A24 will bet on it in the awards season
