Guest band: Diavol Strain.

This Thursday he presented at Metronome Room located in the Bellavista neighborhood Dead Christinea Chilean project led by his vocalist and composer Cristina Fornowho with his original lyrics sung in English moves through styles such as alternative rock, darkwave or neofolk. To locate ourselves we can point out as some influences the works of Chelsea Wolf or of Emma Ruth Rundle.
Dead Christine came to present his new album Stregheria (2024) which comes to us eight years after heaven and hell (2016), the group’s first LP. Despite the long wait, this new work presents a tremendous development with respect to their first project, here the work with sound is much more precise and is much more captivating and mysterious, in this search the band even plays with the “soundscape.” ” and with certain tribal percussions.
Going back to last night, this was started by the opening duo Diavol Straingothic rock and deathrock band that surprised with a sound immersed in reverberation and with a work by the vocalist loaded with emotion, the most memorable moment of the gothic bands was the second song they played, «Venus 17»which is part of their EP Vipera Mortisa song that bathed the entire venue live with the distortion of the guitars in a very interesting texture. The closing came with the song «Divinorvm Curse» from the album Devilwhich ended its show with the energy necessary for a good closing.
Now entering the highlight of the night, the show Dead Christine It had two parts, in the first Cristina and an accompanist played the new album in its entirety Stregheria and in the second part a drummer and a guitarist joined in to play a good number of eight songs from heaven and hell. The first thing that catches your attention about the band live is how well they are able to transfer the album from the studio to the stage, and of course the vocalist Cristina Forno is at the height of their compositions, interpreting them with genuine emotion and care. The song that kicks off, «We Won’t Let the Truth Set Us Free»represents the album’s proposal very well with atmospheric rhythms, sound textures, an ethereal voice with a quasi-tribal quality. “Heavy Rain”the band’s first single and the subject of a video clip, is a strong point both in its studio version and yesterday in Metronome, sounds of nature appear from time to time between the intriguing melody and with a beautiful use of repetition, The song even reminds us of the legendary band Dead Can Dance. It’s in those slow, atmospheric passages where Dead Christine really flourishes.
The interpretation of «Traume» It is especially interesting since in its studio version it is perhaps the song where we can best hear those percussions that we already mentioned. Its adaptation to the live sound with only two musicians is especially interesting because of the way in which it particularly highlights the heavy sound of the guitars. However, the most successful song of the night is “Toilet”since its more cathartic structure works especially well live, especially in its second half where it can perfectly make us think of the sound of a post-rock band. It is in the interpretation of this song where, by the way, we realize the good general sound of the band in the Hall, everything could be heard loud and clear.
After «The Wheel of the Year»piece that closes the album, there was a small pause, during which the other two members joined in to perform the songs of heaven and hellcertainly the live drums give a special strength to the music and works better with the aesthetics of the album, which is an interesting mix of songs that go through many places, even at times reminding us of the sound of grunge. In this second section of the show, the interpretation of «What if it all goes down» It is a strong point since the band achieves an especially precise and noisy sound with great guitar performance. But «She’s on fire»the song that closed the concert was one of the best moments of the evening, here it is particularly the bass that stands out with its dense and cavernous sound that gives all the energy to a great finale.
Yesterday’s evening only indicates positive things about the future of Dead Christinewho we hope will see his next project come to light sooner rather than later.
