Greenland wants to collaborate more closely with the United States in terms of defense and exploration of its mining resources, its prime minister, Mute Egede, declared this Monday.
Also on Monday, Denmark’s foreign minister said he was willing to work with Greenland to “continue talks” with Trump and “ensure legitimate American interests” in the Arctic.
Greenland, an autonomous territory that is part of Denmark, is located on the shortest route between North America and Europe, giving it strategic importance for the United States.
Prime Minister Egede had previously said Greenland was not and would not be “for sale”, but stressed the importance of keeping the territory open to “cooperation and trade with the whole world”.

A “Greenland affair”
This Monday, the president said at a press conference in Copenhagen that his government was willing to begin a dialogue with the incoming Trump administration.
But he added that the territory’s land use was a “Greenland issue.”
“It is Greenland that will decide what agreement we should reach.”
For his part, Denmark’s Foreign Minister also addressed Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland during a press conference in Jerusalem.
“I don’t want to get into any dispute with incoming President Trump,” said Lars Lokke Rasmussen.
“He has a certain way of formulating requests, and what we are doing right now is entering into a more detailed dialogue with him.”
“Americans have some concerns about the security situation in the Arctic that we share,” he added.
Rasmussen said Denmark, in close cooperation with Greenland, was willing to continue talks with Trump to ensure “legitimate American interests.”
Trump also expressed his desire to acquire the Panama Canal and promised to use “economic force” to absorb Canada into the United States.
