Gustavo Adolfo Tarí, designer of Melody: “I have canceled appointments to serve Beyoncé”

Gustavo Adolfo Tarí forged a trajectory between film tailor and custom work for artists, where crafts play a fundamental role. This Alicante … I was already clear that he wanted to devote himself to fashion, and studied in Barcelona, where he began to work with specialized designers in the cinematographic world.
You have worked with great artists such as Shakira, Rosalía or Mariah Carey, how have these orders emerged?
I did the first job for Shakira, for an ad because his stylist contacted me. For Rosalia I started working for a year at the sonar with her dancers and we started doing more things. My clients are stylists, they are usually the ones who get to me and with whom I work closely to shape the designs that artists later look.
And for Melody’s Eurovision costumes, how did this work start?
His stylist Almudena Ruiz contacted me, we both followed the track for a long time and finally this opportunity arose. I did the first commission I did for Benidorm Fest and then we have worked on Eurovision costumes.
Melody wore three different looks on Saturday. First he went on stage with a dress with a large black tail and a Cordoba hat, then removed his tail and discovered a jet black body with rhinestones and finally a silver body adorned with crystals, how was the elaboration of the costumes?
All the costumes are very elaborate and there is a very large technical job behind, not only aesthetic, because one of the most important things was that she was comfortable and easy to put and remove. To get to them there have been a joint work of the entire team. The first has a four -meter tail by three wide, the flyers are made with a thousand meters of Organdí. The Cordoba hat is special and has been done for the occasion, has a wider wing than normal. The body is a craft jewel, the fringes have sewn one by one and wears more than 15,000 crystals.
The theme that Melody interpreted talks about a diva and in the performance we could see that very well represented concept especially at the time when the dancers remove a first layer of the costumes to reveal a new look, something very characteristic in the performances of the great divas of pop, what has been inspiration? Has there been any special demand or request?
They left me quite creative freedom, they asked me to design two looks, and the only clear indication at the beginning was that the first one had a Spanish inspiration. Another request from the artistic director was this time to remove the tail and discover a new suit. The design is basically born from the song, from Melody as an artist and what is told in the lyrics.

How long has you taken this costume?
In most projects I do, the preparation work begins the last two weeks. Prior to that we deal with ideas, we have evidence, we are agreing the pieces … For this commission I have been working for 14 hours. Someday I have finished at 4 in the morning and I have had help for some specific things, but I try to do everything I because they are not usually pieces that you can order another person.
Of all the relevant figures that you have dressed which one that has made you most illusion?
In the end all, for me each project is special and all the treatment equally, a client is a client and I like to give everything until at the end. I was very excited when I worked the first time for Shakira it was a surprise because I did not expect to treat her directly, he called me “Gus” from the beginning when. It was also a big surprise to meet Mariah Carey. Another anecdote was when Beyoncé when he came to Barcelona, they called me to fix two looks. I called two clients to cancel the appointments, and they told me they were delighted to be planted by Beyoncé!
