How do voice actors kiss? The mystery is solved
The world of acting is full of tricks that ordinary mortals don’t even stop to think about. When it comes to dubbing, especially in video games and animation, actors resort to small tricks that maintain the magic of the moment, but that they experience in a completely different way in real life. What happens in the scenes where the characters kiss? You might think that actors really kiss in front of a microphone, but the reality is very different.
This is the trick of voice actors getting behind a microphone when a scene requires kissing
The mystery is discovered by two of the performers of the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. David Hayter, the unmistakable voice of Big Boss, and Jodi Benson, the actress behind Eva, recalled in a recent video about the remake the ingenious way they used to interpret the kisses between the two in one of the love scenes. Their lips did not make contact with the other’s. No. They put their hand in front of their mouth and emulated the passion of the moment between their knuckles (with tongue included). You can see it in the following video starting at minute 4:30.
“One of my favorite memories was, when we had to do a love scene, you and me, which I had never done dubbing before, (…) When you perform the voice you don’t have to do it in real life, but it should sound like something real”says Hayter. They both said they emulated him in front of the camera and said and done: they gave free rein to their love in front of the fist, which is a somewhat… strange scene. “Your hand has never received so much love,” commented Lori Alan, the actress behind The Boss, also present on the set, to which Hayter responded with the irony that characterizes her: “Well…”.
