Jennifer Lopez He returns to the cinema in a genre little explored in his career as an actress. Already known for his versatility as an artist, the foreign criticism praised his role in the new film of “The kiss of the spider woman”, musical adaptation of the classic of Manuel Puig in 1976. Jennifer Lopez in “The kiss of the spider woman”: What is the film about?
The film is based on the homonym musical of 1993, winner of the Tony for Best Musical, which in turn was an adaptation of the novel written by Manuel Puig in 1976. It is a work taken for the first time to the cinema in 1985 with great success, and that earned William Hurt the Oscar for Best Actor.

The new version is directed by Bill Condon, who made “Dreamgirls”, a musical starring Beyoncé in 2006. Years later, even cooler, he takes up the musical approach of “The kiss of the spider woman” with songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb (“cabaret”), and maintains the essence of friendship and tensions between two prisoners, Luis Molina (Tonatiuh) For his sexual orientation, and Valentín Arregui Paz (Luna), a political prisoner.

The trailer of the film was launched in June. You can see some dreamlike scenes with musical shows starring JLo and gloomy sequences set in an Argentine prison. There, the character of Molina finds comfort in the fantasies starring Aurora, a diva of cinema that represents a way of resisting from desire and beauty.
The tape also recovers classics from the original musical, such as “where you are”, which can be heard in the trailer. With this production, Lopez is committed to a type of character other than the one he has interpreted in the past, where it is not the romantic hero (“dream of love”), a warrior of the Amazon (“anaconda”) or the pop star (“Selena”), but a fantasy made flesh.

Condon’s film had its first projection at the Sundance Festival on January 27, 2025, where Tonatiuh’s performance was praised. Other criticisms alluded to the film does not reach the same level of intensity as a whole, compared to the previous ones. Its premiere is scheduled for October 10 in cinemas worldwide.
