Judge blocks Trump’s decision to freeze federal expenses – DW – 01/29/2025

After a confused day, a federal judge from the United States suspended on Tuesday (28.01.2025) the decision of President Donald Trump to freeze several billions of dollars of public aid, a measure that puts into risk access to medical coverage of many low -income citizens.

It all started with a White House memorandum published Monday night, in which federal departments and agencies were asked to freeze some “assistance” expenses to review them and make sure they are satisfied with the “president’s priorities” .

The order of the White House Budget office, a week after Trump’s assumption, threatened to stop the disbursement of hundreds of billions of dollars in funds for local governments, educational entities or small loans for companies.

In principle, these were expenses linked to assistance and support activities from the State, for which each agency must carry out a “complete analysis”, according to a document accessed by the AFP.

The White House described it as a “very responsible measure.” But the federal judge of the capital who attended the case, ordered on Tuesday afternoon the immediate suspension of the decree, until next Monday, February 3.

More challenges come

General prosecutors of 23 states also announced that they will challenge the order of the Executive. Among the affected programs are those linked to the energy transition and those provided for areas affected by natural catastrophes.

The decision follows a similar one that also froze external aid items.

The measure does not affect the funds that reach Americans through the Medicare medical insurance system, for example.

Several NGOs and business groups filed a complaint on Tuesday against the Government Budget Office to try to block the Trump order.

The State Attorney General of Mischigan, Dana Nessel, opened an investigation to “protect these programs and reactivate vital services,” he announced in X.
