During one of the concerts of their world tour “Women no longer cry World Tour” in Miami, Colombian singer Shakira dedicated an emotional tribute to Emilio and Gloria Estefan, two iconic figures of Latin music.
Visibly excited, Shakira went to the public to dedicate a few words to the legendary Cuban musicians: “I want to make a special mention to Gloria and Emilio Estefan who are here today. It makes me very excited that they accompany me tonight, and I want you to know that when I needed someone to believe in me, you did. When I felt vulnerable, you gave me strength, and that’s why I am in debt.
The relationship between Shakira and Estefan has its roots at the end of the 1990s, when Emilio Estefan produced his album, where are the thieves? (1998). This work, which included successes such as “Eyes like this” and “Blind, Deaf -mute”, was key to catapulting Shakira to international fame.
Emilio Estefan has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Shakira. In the first edition of the Latin Women’s Awards in Billboard’s music, where Shakira was appointed woman of the year, Emilio declared: “With the love we love you, how proud we are of you, especially that you follow this blessing. Now we love you more than ever, you are careful more than ever. We worship you.” These words charged a special meaning, since they were pronounced a few months after the very publicized rupture of Shakira with the footballer Gerard Piqué.
For his part, Gloria Estefan played a fundamental role in Shakira’s transition to the Anglopartla market, contributing directly to the production of her English album Laundry Service, which sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. Gloria helped Shakira adapt songs like “inevitable” and “Eyes like this”, working with her in the phonetics to achieve an authentic interpretation.
In addition, as Gloria said, she had to intercede against Tommy Mottola, an influential musical entrepreneur who initially did not believe in the viability of an album completely in English for Shakira. Thanks to the support of Gloria, the project could be completed and became a resounding success.
