La Jornada – Prior to Trump’s inauguration, Sheinbaum defends fellow citizens in the US

Chinantla, Pue. A few hours before the start of Donald Trump’s second term, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated this Sunday that her government will defend her compatriots in the United States and maintained that without Mexicans the American economy could not function.

When leading the delivery of Women’s Welfare Pension cards, the president said that although she trusts that the relationship between her government and Trump’s will be good, “it must be heard well and far away: Mexico is no one’s colony, no It is nobody’s protectorate.”

In the Mixteca of Puebla, the region of origin of hundreds of thousands of Mexican migrants in the United States, Sheinbaum Pardo stated that “the people of Mexico have taken our economy forward, but also the economy of the United States.”

“What would New York be without the Mixtecs and Lao Mixtecs? That’s why we call it Puebla York, because there they work in services, they work in construction, they also move the economy there forward,” he added at the conclusion of a work tour of Guerrero and Puebla. Which started on Thursday.

In front of thousands of people gathered at the Chinantla Sports Center, he stressed that 7 out of every 10 farm workers in the United States are of Mexican origin. “Would Americans hardly have food on the table if it weren’t for Mexican men and women? The best workers in the fields are the Mexicans, let no one think otherwise.”

He reaffirmed that although his government has a strategy ready to defend its compatriots through the Mexican consular network in the United States, the US authorities are also aware that their country needs migrants.

”The United States government also knows that it could not advance its economy if it were not for the Mexican men and women who live on the other side,” he declared.

He pointed out that former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had a good understanding with Trump.
“And that’s why I think that we are going to reach a good understanding, that we are going to understand each other. It’s always dialogue there. But in any case, let it be heard well, let it be heard far away, Mexico is no one’s colony, it is no one’s protectorate. Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country. And we will always defend the people of Mexico, the nation and our homeland.”
