LGTBIQ+: celebrities ask the US Government to maintain funds to prevent community deaths


Within the framework of Pride month LGTBIQ+, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Pedro Pascal and another more than one hundred celebrities from the entertainment world signed a letter on Monday in which They asked the United States Government to maintain the budget for the federal program that provides suicide prevention services to people in the community.

The petition arises under the protection of The Trevor Project, which requires that the Financing of 50 million dollars of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline projectwhich offers support 24 hours during the seven days of the week.

This initiative takes place after a filtering draft of the Budget of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) revealed that The government has proposed to eliminate federal funds from the services of 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which gives emergency help to young LGTBIQ+ with suicidal thoughts.

In the letter, also signed by other names such as Christina Aguilera, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Paulson, Daniel Radcliffe, Troye Sivan or Cara DelevingneThey point out that this cut will have “devastating and potentially mortal consequences for LGTB young people throughout the country.”

“These are people, not politics. In a moment of deep division, let’s let this be something that we can all agree on: no young man should run out of help at their darkest moment,” the signatories point out, who are mostly dedicated to the world of entertainment.

Thus, they ask the US President’s administration, Donald Trumpand the Congress that restores and Protect the Funds of the Services of 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the Fiscal Year 2026.

The executive director of Trevor Project, Jaymes Black, thanked the celebrities involved and stressed that young LGTBIQ+ “sail for a world that too often tells them that they do not belong to him.”

In the petition, The Trevor Project states that this program, launched in 2022, has connected about 1.3 million people with advisors “who save lives” and remember that The young people of the group are four times more likely to try to commit suicide than heterosexual people.

In this sense, the organization estimates that more than 1.8 million young people LGTBIQ+ in the United States “seriously” suicide every year, and at least one tries to commit suicide every 45 seconds.
