Lockheed Martin advances development of an autonomous version of the US Army’s MRLS HIMARS.

With the aim of developing new autonomous systems that allow modernizing artillery capabilities and maximizing operational efficiency, Lockheed Martin presented a prototype of the MRLS HIMARS system equipped with an autonomous driving system, designed for operation in the US Army.

On December 4, the prototype carried out a test in which the HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems) carried out autonomous driving without the intervention of a driver, using non-emitting perception sensors. This system enables autonomous operations at any time of day, offering a flexible and reliable solution that expands the US Army’s current capabilities.

In this regard, Lockheed Martin’s Director of Business Development, Becky Withrow, noted that “Our approach offers a unique solution that allows the Army to upgrade its current HIMARS fleet with enhanced autonomous capability, while retaining the option for manned operations.”

The US Army plans to implement operations that combine manned and autonomous HIMARS, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of artillery missions. According to the official statement, in addition to the HIMARS system, Lockheed Martin continues to promote autonomous technologies in various areas. For example, Sikorsky, one of its subsidiaries, is working on the MATRIX flight autonomy system, while Lockheed Martin Skunk Works is developing aircraft controlled by artificial intelligence.

Currently, HIMARS is one of the most modern and effective elements in the artillery inventory of numerous NATO countries, thanks to the fact that it is capable of using guided projectiles from the GMLRS family. This system became relevant during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, being key to the destruction of high-value targets at long distances.
