Marco Rubio attacks Gustavo Petro after diplomatic crisis with Trump

The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, lashed out at the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, after the diplomatic crisis with the Donald Trump government, which occurred last weekend.

In an interview broadcast on Thursday night in The Megyn Kelly ShowRubio said that Petro does not represent the interests of Colombians and does not have the popular vote to present himself again as a candidate in elections.

“I think most people in Colombia, a country that I know very well, does not like its president. I mean, this guy would have elections today and lose, it is unpopular in Colombia, ”said Rubio.

“I think many people from their business class think: ‘What is this guy doing?’ This is absurd. I mean, it is normal for you to do it … we were deporting people to Colombia, just as we deported people to all the countries of the world. And, by the way, if there are illegal American immigrants in another country, we would have to accept that they came here, ”continued the Secretary of State for the United States on the crisis last weekend.

Marco Rubio referred to Petro’s criticism to the United States: “Unfortunately, most people who think about foreign policy do not know much about it. The more I have entered and the more I read the people who say they know about foreign policy, the more I realize that many of the people who consider experts have no idea what they are talking about. ”

What happened between the United States and Colombia?

The United States and the Colombian government had friction after, by instruction of President Petro, the flights of undocumented migrants were not allowed to enter the country, due to accusations of the president that the occupants of said journeys were being mistreated.

Given this scenario, Donald Trump’s government imposed on Colombia hard measures that consisted of 25% commercial tariffs on all products that arrived from the national territory and that after a week would be 50%. He also suspended the entire visas expedition and individually sanctioned officials of the Petro administration.

Shortly after, both countries gave up and solved the problem.

“I don’t think we were matheneated to Colombia. Colombia signed an agreement on sending those planes and when they were in the air it broke it. It’s not bullying, they broke an agreement, ”said the Secretary of State.

“We presented options to President Trump and immediately took actions. (…) This did not take six weeks or six months, he took six hours, ”he told the journalist.
