Meghan and Harry confront Mark Zuckerberg after Meta changes
Following the latest updates from Mark Zuckerberg, in which the founder of Meta implemented changes that allow insults and abuse towards women, minorities and people of various identities under the argument “freedom of expression”, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex question these decisions in a statement titled “Verifying Meta” which they published on the website of their Archewell foundation.
In the statement, Meghan and Harry urge users, shareholders and advertisers to take action against Meta’s recent decisions. In addition, they accuse the company of “lack of integrity”, of “normalizing hate speech” and of facilitating the spread of “hate, lies and division at the expense of others”, warning of an imminent “global mental health crisis “.
“It doesn’t matter if your views are left, right, or somewhere in between: Meta’s latest news about policy changes directly undermines freedom of expression. This should worry us all deeply,” they wrote.
“Contrary to what the platform advocates, allowing further abuse and normalizing hate speech serves to silence debate and freedom of expression, not encourage it.”
Meghan and Harry, who on numerous occasions have emphasized taking care of the content published on social networks, highlighted that Meta updates promote hate.
“Millions of people use Meta’s platforms in the United States and hundreds of millions more use them around the world. Many use the platform to spread joy, build community, and share motivational information. Unfortunately, Meta’s recent decisions go directly against from their stated mission to “create human connections” and instead prioritize those who use platforms to spread hate, lies, and division at the expense of everyone else.”
