Minecraft clone “Chunked” records every action of the player in the blockchain somnia

In summary

  • Chunked, a clone of Minecraft On-Chain in the Somnia test, records every action of the player in the blockchain.
  • Developed by MSQUARED, Chunked seeks to explore the limits of the web 3 games with logic and data stored entirely in intelligent contracts.
  • Although it is still in a technical test phase, it offers a fluid experience; MSQUARED plans more experiments until the launch of Somnia in Mainnet.

A Minecraft clone that runs in the Blockchain Somnia test called Chunked records each action of the game in the blockchain – from the movement of a player to each block placed, mined and manufactured.

The MSQUARED creator, a division of the technological constructor of improbable metovers, says that this is the first of several blockchain experiments while the company seeks to see how far the limits of cryptojuegos can take.

Playing is a fluid experience, even with all on-chain connections, since there is no remarkable delay when placing or undermining a block. That said, problems may arise when manufacturing with blocks that momentarily disappear from the player’s inventory. In addition, the edges of the game world are quite small, significantly reducing the infinite sandbox experience of the Minecraft real.

MSQUARED CEO, Rob Whitehead, told Decrypt That although it is still in a “technical demonstration”, the game is designed to be a true web3 game, not just a web2 game with NFTS “screwed to the side”.

Whitehead explained that Chunked does not have a traditional server that supports him, with everything supported by the Somnia test. As such, if Msquared decided to stop supporting the game, on-chain would continue to exist forever and could be retaken by the community to continue development.

“All data from the Chunked world and all (its) logic are in Somnia, so it is free to be interacted and read indefinitely,” Whitehead said. “Chunked Logic is a series of on-chain intelligent contracts that will be open source. The community can use the existing data of the On-Chain world, or implement their own contracts and make their own bifurcation totally separated from the world with different rules.”

This is nothing new, he added, pointing to the movement of autonomous worlds that he has tried to put world-game worlds for these same reasons. Dark Forest is a main example of this in action, as a space exploration game that puts everything on-chain and takes advantage of zero knowledge tests to maintain the mystery.

The next Eve Frontier of CCP Games-a spin-off focused on the survival of Eve Online-will do the same with Ethereum-based architecture.

“The challenges have now been that the chains (especially Layer-1) have simply not had gross performance to handle games in a large-scale real-scale time like this, with most of the projects being much simpler games with limited attraction,” said Whitehead.

Recently, a Crossy Road clone in the Megaeth Public Testnet became viral since each action in the game was recorded on-chain. As with Chunked, it could only be achieved due to a new era of emerging high performance networks; Ethereum’s Mainnet would certainly not have been up to the task.

“We are currently running in Testnet, learning what new types of on-chain games are possible,” Whitehead said. “We would love to see that this evolves towards a persistent voxel world on-chain in Mainnet, which is property and evolves by a community of co-creators.”

Somnia is expected to arrive at Mainnet at some point in this year. In this way, MSQUARED plans to launch a series of other on-chain experiments, with the most successful tests becoming “complete commercial projects” once Somnia is completely launched in Mainnet.
