Selena Gomez returns to the top 10 of the Hot Latin Songs list of Billboard (dated April 5) with “Sad eyes”, along with Benny Blanco and The Marias, who debuts in No. 4. Thanks to this reinterpretation of the 1981 classic ballad “the boy of sad eyes” by Jeanette, Blanco and The Marías achieve their first top 10 in their second appearance on the list.
“Sad eyes” debuts in No. 4 in Hot Latin Songs – which combines radial diffusion data, digital sales and streaming in its formula – mainly thanks to streaming activity. The song registered 8.2 million official streams in the United States in the follow -up week that ended on March 27, according to Luminate. This figure leads her to debut in the No. 3 of Latin Streaming Songs, marking the fifth Top 10 for Gomez and the first top 10 for Blanco and The Marías in this Chart.
“Sad eyes” by Gomez includes a sample of “The boy with sad eyes” by the Spanish-British artist Jeanette, who jumped to fame in the 70s. Although the theme composed of Manuel Alejandro did not enter the lists, the global success of the singer-songwriter “because you go” reached No. 25 in Latin Pop Airplay in 2008.
The bilingual version of “sad eyes” intertwining nostalgic melodies with a modern sound, where Gomez sings in English and María Zardoya, from The Marias, brings her soft voice to reflect the jeseanette style adapted to a contemporary audience.
The collaboration has promoted Blanco and The Marías to get their first top 10 in Hot Latin Songs, after each one achieved a previous entry. Blanco reached No. 22 last December as a guest artist in “Degenere” by Myke Towers. For his part, The Marias arrived at No. 17 with his collaboration with Bad Bunny “another sunset” in 2022.
For Gomez, “Sad Eyes” marks his fifth Top 10 and the first since “Selfish Love”, along with DJ Snake, debuted and reached position No. 6 in 2021.
“Sad eyes” also stands out in other lists of Billboard. Debuts in No. 59 of the Billboard Hot 100 of all genres. In addition, it begins in No. 63 of the Billboard Global 200 with 19.5 million streams, and in No. 118 of the Global Excl. US with 11.3 million views outside the United States.
Sales also contribute to the debut on the Top 10 of Hot Latin Songs, by registering “sad eyes” 1,000 downloads in the United States, which translates into a debut in No. 1 of the Latin Digital Song Sales list.
