The case of Jack the Ripperone of the most infamous serial killers in history, brings new debates after a DNA analysis that points to Aaron Kosminskia Polish barber, as the main suspect.
This information, disseminated by CBS Newsis based on evidence extracted from a shawl recovered at the scene of one of the crimes. Now, the descendants of one of the victims demand a new investigation to confirm the identity of the murderer.
DNA analysis: what was discovered?
The analysis was carried out in 2014 by the researcher Russell Edwards and the doctor Jari Louhelainenprofessor at Liverpool John Moores University.
According to Edwards, they recovered DNA segments from blood and semen from a shawl found next to the body of Catherine Eddowesthe fourth victim of Jack the Ripper, murdered on September 30, 1888.

The DNA matched Karen Millera direct descendant of Eddowes. Louhelainen explained:
The first result showed a 99.2% match. “When we analyzed the other DNA strand, we got a 100% perfect match.”

This DNA was linked to a descendant of Aaron Kosminski.
Who was Aaron Kosminski?
Kosminski was born in Poland in 1865 and emigrated to London in the 1880s with his family, fleeing anti-Semitic pogroms in Russia.
He lived near the crime scenes and was identified by a witness as someone seen with one of the victims. However, the witness refused to formally testify, forcing the police to release him.
In 1889, Kosminski entered a psychiatric asylumwhere he was described as homeless.
He died in 1919 due to gangrene and was buried in East Ham Cemetery, London.
Why are they asking for a new investigation?
Karen Miller, a descendant of Catherine Eddowes, supports the request for a new inquest based on DNA evidence. Miller stated:
The name of Jack the Ripper has become a famous character, but the victims did not get justice in their time. “Now we need this inquest to legally name the murderer.”
Kosminski’s descendants also support the idea. Amanda PoulosKosminski’s great-great-grandniece, said:
“I am more than happy to finally establish what really happened.”
Criticisms and limitations of DNA analysis
Although Edwards’ tests have attracted interest, have not been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journalwhich prevents independent verification of the method. Additionally, in 2021, the attorney general Michael Ellis denied a similar request, arguing that there was insufficient evidence to justify a new inquest.
