Oldroot, the Minecraft mystery that had the players reading verses of Edgar Allan Poe and solving mathematical problems

In 2014, in full effervescence of Minecraft Creepypastas stories and monstrous entities, a Reddit message was about to go unnoticed. A user named Lewisgreen had been contacted by one Oldroot. At that time, the curious members of the Minecraft community did not know that they were starting one of the strangest mysteries in the history of the game. One who took more than two years, hundreds of complex clues and the promise of “those who are pure will see what is hidden in the dark.”

Even today it is really difficult to say what Oldroot represented. That first Critical Message of Reddit was the first undercover track. He led to an image that clarified by the brightness revealed a Minecraft map, which hid a disturbing figure and, more importantly, a link. That link led to cryptic sounds, these to more cryptic images and for when this group of increasing researchers realized, they were totally inside the mystery.

Original Oldroot Message that launched the mystery

Very soon it was clear that he was not a Creepypasta of any Minecraft. Most of these were more direct and striking, they went to quick scare. Here, search weeks were revealing more and more complex puzzles. Proof of this was to find an ally in the verses of Edgar Allan Poe, thanks to clues that referenced one “Raven”, which is the name of one of his poems. Later, the researchers had to study hidden messages in Rembrandt.

At times it almost seemed that Oldroot was taking advantage of a totally obsessed community with his puzzleand that they often resorted to ask them for help. Poe’s verses were followed by linguistic and mathematical encryptions. Some required to change numerical keys to hexadecimal bases, and that resulted in more key images, which contained messages with clues that fired theories, such as “look at the past to know the future.” In one of the most referenced by the community, a strange temple appears that seems to refer to some kind of cult inside a Minecraft server.

The RetrogamingNow channel made an exhaustive summary of how complex it was a research process as exhausting as complex, and which was expanding more than two years. At that time it took a long time to even give clues within the game. It was considered a great advance to find a mysterious server that, among other points of interest, contained the temple that appeared in that photograph. The researchers launched search teams, who gave with posters that someone had left before in that world. An individual who had discovered days before could have died because of the server.

The resolution was disappointingpartly because it was not resolution at all. In 2016, Oldroot uncovered as Alex Bale, creator of the entire mystery, and in a post called “conclusion” he sincere with the community saying that he would not continue adding clues to the project. Those years had frustrated him to see that the community was not at all aimed, and that he had to give too many clues. At the same time his bittersweet farewell left more mysteries, stating that the most insicious could solve the puzzle without their help. Since all the tracks were connected without the need for him to guide in the right direction.

Today Oldroot still does not resolve. In Reddit, forums are still open where their theories were discussed, in YouTube compilation videos users continue to explore the meaning of their messages. Even when its creator had given the issue for closed, the community did not seem ready to turn page, and many are still obvious to find answers.
