This new document, which can be obtained by Americans and immigrants with legal status, will replace the use of driver’s licenses or traditional state IDs, which until now were accepted to fly within the country, according to the United States Department of Homeland Security. United States (DHS). Initially, this measure was planned for May 2023, but was postponed until 2025.
Real ID is a federal identification issued by states to unify security standards for driver’s licenses. It was introduced in 2005 after the attacks of September 11, 2001, with the aim of strengthening identity controls and preventing the use of falsified documents. Although Real ID will be required for domestic flights, current passports, military IDs and other federal credentials are also accepted. It will be used not only in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, but also in all five compliant territories.
If you are an American or legally residing in the United States, you can apply for Real ID at your local motor vehicle (DMV) office. The necessary documents must have your full name and date of birth:
- Proof of identity: Valid passport or birth certificate.
- Proof of Social Security number.
- Two proofs of address: Utility bills or bank statements.
- It is important to check the specific requirements of the state where you reside, as they may vary.
- Certified copy of a military discharge document (DD214).
- Summary of Social Security Administration (SSA) benefits.
- United States Baptism Certificate.
- United States Census Birth Record.
- The cost to obtain Real ID varies between US$20 and US$60depending on the state. You could check with your local DMV office to find out the exact price.
NOTE: Immigrants can also get Real ID as long as they provide proof of U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or temporary legal status, according to DHS regulations.
The driver’s license is useful for these cases:
- Access to certain federal facilities, such as courthouses and the State Department
- Boarding on federally regulated commercial aircraft
- military bases
- Entrance to nuclear power plants.
