Republican Senator Rick Scott demanded from the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a formal response to the recent statements by Nicolás Maduro, who urged the Brazilian Army to invade US territory.
These statements occurred during Maduro’s inauguration on January 10, considered illegitimate by much of the international community.
“Maduro blatantly incited war against the United States through the Brazilian government. The international community already knows that Maduro stole these elections from the Venezuelan people and from the elected president Edmundo González, and has now resorted to threatening the United States and taking Americans hostage. “We cannot tolerate this,” he said.
In his message, Maduro called for the “liberation” of Puerto Rico, which Scott described as a clear attempt to incite war against the United States using the Brazilian State as an intermediary.
“Incendiary, dangerous and unacceptable” statements
The senator stressed that these statements are “inflammatory, dangerous and unacceptable”, reflecting what he described as the nature of Maduro: “A murderous dictator who disrupts the peace of the region while further impoverishing Venezuela and oppressing its citizens.”
Scott asked the Lula government an immediate and formal response that clarifies Brazil’s position regarding these statements, as well as its position regarding this type of incitement in international organizations such as the Organization of American States or the United Nations.
«Such incitement cannot go unanswered. The hemisphere and, frankly, the world, deserve an immediate response to Maduro’s dangerous words from the Brazilian government,” Scott said.
He demanded that Brazilian authorities reject any suggestion of military aggression against the United States.

The Republican senator noted that Maduro’s words cannot be taken lightly, given its history of alliances with countries such as China, Russia and Iran, considered adversaries of the United States. He also warned about the dangers that the socialist leader represents for the stability of the hemisphere and the world.
“I hope the Brazilian government agrees that anyone who tries to dismiss Maduro’s words as mere political rhetoric must remember that such comments are too serious and dangerous. Furthermore, Brazil’s government has been challenged for Maduro’s reckless comment because it suggests that “believes that the Brazilian State would be interested in such military aggression,” he warned.
President Lula must condemn Maduro’s threats against the US and make clear that Brazil will not be used as a pawn in Maduro’s sick games.
