Shakira against Trump policies: “We have to stay together” | Mia 94.3

The renowned Colombian singer Shakira has shared her perspective on the current life as an immigrant in the United States, amid the immigration policies implemented by President Donald Trump.

In a recent interview with the BBCthe 48 -year -old superstar reflected on the changes he has witnessed in the country since he moved to Miami in the 90s to start his musical career.

“I was only 19 when I moved to the United States, like many other Colombian immigrants who come to this country looking for a better future,” said Shakira. During that stage, he immersed himself in Leonard Cohen’s reading, Walt Whitman and Bob Dylan to learn English and perfect his art as a composer.

“It means living in constant fear,” Shakira told BBC in describing the current situation of immigrants. “And it’s painful to see.”

Faithful to her commitment to social justice, Loba’s interpreter also approached the challenges facing the Latin community after Trump’s return to the White House. Since his return to power at the beginning of this year, the president has intensified measures against the alleged migratory violations, which has generated protests in cities such as Los Angeles and other parts of the country, in response to the rags of the Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE).

The artist added: “Now, more than ever, we have to remain united. Now, more than ever, we have to raise our voices and make it very clear that a country can change its immigration policies, but the treatment towards all people must always be human.”

During the Grammy Awards ceremony in February, where she was awarded for her album, women no longer cry (2024), Shakira dedicated the award “To all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country”, and added: “You are loved, you are valuable, and I will always fight with you.”

The Colombian joins a growing list of artists who have publicly sentenced federal raids in southern California. After the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles in early June, figures such as Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler, The Creator, Finneos, The Game, Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Kehlani, Tom Morello, Reneé Rapp and Rebecca Black have also raised their voices against government actions.
