Shakira says that being an immigrant with Trump “means living with constant fear”

Shakira said that being an immigrant in the United States under the Trump administration means “living with constant fear” in a recent interview.

In statements to BBCthe Colombian singer – who is already a pop star in her native country – recalled how she moved to the United States at the end of her adolescence. “I was only 19 when I moved to the United States, like many other Colombian immigrants who come to this country in search of a better future,” said ‘Whenever, wherever’.

Shakira added that, to assimilate an English -speaking audience, she “began reading Leonard Cohen, Walt Whitman and Bob Dylan, trying to understand how the English language works within the composition of songs.”

Now, however, the immigrant experience “means living with constant fear,” Shakira told the BBC. “And it is painful to see it.”

And he continued: “Now, more than ever, we have to remain united. Now, more than ever, we have to raise our voices and make it very clear that a country can change its immigration policies, but the treatment of all people must always be human.”

Earlier this year, winning the prize for the best Latin pop album in the Grammy 2025, Shakira dedicated his prize to those who would probably be affected by the Trump administration: “I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters of this country. They are loved, they are worth it and I will always fight with you.”

After the raids of the ICE that the United States is razing, but, especially, Los Angeles, Olivia Rodrigo has also raised the voice this Saturday on social networks. “I have lived in Los Angeles all my life and I am deeply disgusted by these violent deportations of my neighbors under the current administration,” he wrote.

“Los Angeles would not exist without immigrants. Treating working members of the community with so little respect, empathy and due process is horrible. I am with the beautiful and diverse community of Los Angeles and with immigrants from all over the United States.”
