On May 8, 2025, Justin Baldoni’s legal team presented a citation aimed at Taylor Swift and his law firm, Venable LLP. This citation was answered with a motion to cancel it, in which Swift and Blake Lively representatives described it as an “unjustified fishing expedition.” The federal judge Lewis J. Liman He agreed with that evaluation, and warned that they continue similar maneuvers could lead to sanctions against Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedmanaccording to ‘Variety’.

The Baldoni team ended up voluntarily withdrawing the citation. According to judicial documents, they argued that they had already obtained by other means the information they were looking for. Neither Swift nor their representatives had to declare or deliver evidence.

Why did Justin Baldoni’s team want to quote Taylor Swift?

According to documents presented to the Court, Baldoni and his team alleged having received information from a source close to Swift. That person said that Lively’s lawyer would have threatened to make ten years of messages between Swift and Lively, unless the singer issued a public support statement. In addition, supposedly, Swift would have been pressured to erase those conversations.

The lawyer Bryan Freedman claimed that his office had received a voice call on February 14 with these accusations, and that later his team tried to get a letter that allegedly documented that attempt to coercion. Swift citation was looking for that letter precisely.

However, both Lively and Swift’s team described the accusations as false and scandalous. In a statement released by ‘Variety’, a spokesman for Lively declared:

“We support the efforts of the Taylor team to cancel these inappropriate citations and we will continue to defend any unfairly harassed or threatened third party in the process.”

For its part, a Swift spokesman denounced that the intention of citing it was simply to generate media “click”, stating that the artist was not involved in the production of the film ‘It ends with us’ in any creative capacity.

How has the Baldoni vs. case advanced. Lively in recent months?

Since its inception in December 2024, the case has climbed with multiple demands and contrademands. Blake Lively accused Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and reprisals during the filming of ‘It Ends With Us’. Baldoni, in turn, presented a defamation contrademand, claiming that Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds tried to destroy their career through false accusations.

According to information from the federal file, the Judge Liman eliminated the registration of several accusations made by Baldoni, considering that they had the sole purpose of defame to Lively without relevance for the litigation. In addition, the court has urged both parties to reduce the tone and focus on the allegations that are really in dispute. The date of the trial is scheduled for March 2026, and so far no motion has been accepted to postpone it.

Taylor Swift’s output of the case seems to mark an effort to limit media exposure and prevent external figures from being used as a distraction in a process that, according to the court, must concentrate exclusively on accusations of harassment and reprisals.
