The Gulf of Mexico changes to ‘Gulf of America’ in Google Maps for the USA.

–
The body of water previously known in the United States as the Gulf of Mexico now appears for Google Maps users in that country such as the United States Gulf (“Gulf of America”, in English).
The change occurs after a decree of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, which changes the name of the area. Google said previously that it has “a long practice to apply name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”
“People who use Maps in the United States will see ‘Gulf of the United States’ (‘Gulf of America’, in English), and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico’. Everyone will see both names, ”said the company in a statement on Monday.
Last month, Google said it would also change the name of Mount McKinley, the highest peak in Denali, after Trump’s decree. The former president Barack Obama renamed Alaska’s emblematic place as Denali in 2015 as a wink to the native population of the region. But that change had not been made on Google Maps until Tuesday.
Both changes derive from a decree that Trump signed shortly after assuming the position, saying that the changes “honor American greatness.”
The decree criticized Obama’s decision to change McKinley’s name as “an affront to the life of President McKinley, his achievements and sacrifice.” Establishing parallels with Trump, the decree indicates that McKinley “defended the tariffs” and was killed “in an attack on the values of our nation and our success.”
The Federal Aviation Administration of the United States also issued a notice on Monday about geographical names.

“Note that FAA is in the process of updating our data and graphics to show a change of name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of the United States and a change of name from Denali to Monte McKinley,” said the agency.
The United States Coast Guard, responsible for patrolling the country’s maritime coastal waters, has also begun to incorporate the new change of name of the United States Gulf (“Gulf of America”) in its public notices.
According to Google, in Mexico it will continue to appear as a “Gulf of Mexico” in Google Maps, while in other countries both options will appear (that is, both Gulf of Mexico and Gulf de América).
However, after a CNN review from Mexico, it was observed that Google Maps shows both names according to the zoom you make on the cell phone screen.

Previously, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, greatly dismissed the Google movement, noting that the decree only applies to the US continental platform and suggesting that her country would not comply with it.
“The Gulf of Mexico is still the Gulf of Mexico,” Sheinbaum said at the end of January.
The Mexican president even sent a letter to Google to challenge the decision of the technological giant to comply with the Trump order.

In other countries such as Uruguay, Spain and Argentina, both options are also shown in MAPS (Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of America), as Google said on Monday.

In Colombia, as in Mexico, you can see the two names according to the zoom made.
