Deciphering the symbols: the hope and the figure of Saint Thomas Aquinas in art by Nieves Rupérez Almajano
Within the framework of San Esteban conversations, which this year celebrates two ephemeris of great relevance, the teacher Nieves Rupérez Almajano offered a deep immersion in the iconographic universe of Saint Thomas Aquinas. During his conference, held last Tuesday, December 3, the art history expert unravels the visual codes that have accompanied the Angelic doctor over the centuries.
Rupérez highlighted how the image of Santo Tomás has evolved over time, adapting to the different historical and cultural contexts. He analyzed in detail elements such as the symbology of the attributes that accompany the philosopher (such as books, pen or crown of thorns), the iconography of his most important works (the Summa Theologicafor example) and the representation of the key moments of his life.
The rapporteur stressed the importance of iconography as a tool to understand the reception and impact of Thomistic thought. The images, like words, transmit ideas, emotions and values, and in the case of Santo Tomás, have contributed to consolidate their figure as one of the greatest thinkers in history.
The conference, which had great public assistance, raised a lively debate about the relationship between image and thought, and the validity of Tomás’ legacy today.
