The mystery deepens when police fear the missing sisters last seen a week ago “went into” the Aberdeen River, but find no evidence to suggest they “intended to harm themselves”.

Detectives now fear two sisters who went missing a week ago in Aberdeen have fallen into a river, but insist there is no evidence left to suggest criminality.

Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, 32, who are part of a set of triplets, disappeared from the city last Tuesday, January 7, in freezing conditions.

The couple, originally from Hungary, were last seen on CCTV walking across Victoria Bridge over the River Dee shortly after 2am.

Since then, specialist search teams, including marine divers and police dogs, have been deployed along the river as concerns grow for their safety.

Today, Police Scotland Superintendent David Howison said: “All of our investigations to date do not provide any evidence that criminality was involved in the disappearance.”

“There is obviously great concern when people are missing for such a significant period of time. But extensive police investigations to date have not revealed any suspicious circumstances.’

He added: “We have a number of hypotheses and we are keeping a very open mind in terms of what could have happened.”

“But one of the leading theories is that for some reason the sisters entered the water here, and that’s why much of the search activity you’ll see in recent days has focused on the river and its surrounding areas.”

Eliza and Henrietta Huszti were last seen on CCTV shortly after 2am last Tuesday in Aberdeen.

Superintendent Howison said the landlord of the house they were renting raised the alarm, adding: “In the previous days, the sisters had indicated to the landlord that they intended to vacate the tenancy.

“The owner carried out inquiries at the address, which led them to be concerned about the whereabouts of the sisters, specifically due to some materials and personal belongings that had been left at the address.”

He continued: ‘There is nothing specific within the property to suggest they intended to disappear or intended to harm themselves.

‘What was inside the property, there were a number of personal belongings which are now in the possession of the police and are things we can interrogate to obtain further information in relation to the wider circumstances.

“But nothing that explicitly suggests they wanted to leave the area immediately or had any intention of harming themselves.”

He also confirmed that the owner had been identified as a witness, but there were no suspects and the investigation remained a missing person and not a criminal investigation.

Police also said there was no evidence the sisters left the immediate area and specialist search officers yesterday focused on the banks of the river between Wellington Bridge and South Harbour.

In a heartfelt statement issued through Police Scotland, the sisters’ family urged anyone with information to contact police.

Relatives said: ‘This has been a very worrying and upsetting time for our family. We are very worried about Eliza and Henrietta and all we want is for them to be found.

“If you think you may have any information that could help the police find Eliza and Henrietta, please pass it on as soon as possible.”

They said they ‘appreciate’ all the support their family has received and asked that their privacy be respected at this time.

Edit, the other triplet, said that her two sisters were very close and did most things together.

The sisters’ other brother, Jozsef, told the BBC that his mother spoke to the two on the first Saturday in January and that nothing seemed out of the ordinary about them.

The last time they were seen was caught on CCTV cameras, which showed they had crossed the bridge towards the Torry area and turned right along a footpath alongside the River Dee, heading towards the Aberdeen Boat Membership.

Both are described as white, of slim build and with long brown hair.

Search and rescue boats were on the river over the weekend, while a police helicopter also scoured the area from above.

Officers are also examining CCTV footage from the area, as well as carrying out door-to-door inquiries and speaking to local businesses.

Police Scotland Chief Inspector Darren Bruce said: “Eliza and Henrietta’s family remain extremely concerned about them and we are in close contact with them as our searches continue.”

“We know that people in Aberdeen are also seriously concerned about the two missing sisters and I would again urge anyone with information that could help to contact us.

He added: “The River Dee remains the focus of our searches as there is no evidence the sisters have left the immediate area.”

‘I would ask again, if you were in the area in the early hours of last Tuesday morning, please remember, did you notice anyone matching your description?

‘Even if it doesn’t seem significant, please pass on any information. Any information could be essential.
