The mystery of Araujo’s termination clause
This Thursday, January 23, FC Barcelona made Ronald Araujo’s renewal official. After being close to leaving in this winter market, the Barcelona club has been able to retain the Uruguayan defender. The Uruguayan signed the new contract, which extends his relationship with Barça until 2031. However, unlike usual, in the statement issued by the Catalan entity, the termination clause is not specified.
The starting price of the Barça central defender is a mysteryalthough the reason for this secrecy has a very clear and obvious reason. In fact, one of the keys to the agreement for Araujo’s renewal has been a sharp drop in his termination clause, which until now was estimated at 1,000 million euros to prevent big clubs from having the opportunity to sign him at an affordable price.
The center back, already tempted by offers from other teams, did not want to feel tied down by this high value. In this way, in case of not being satisfied with his role in FC Barcelona due to a loss of prominence, as has already happened in recent weeks for the immovable couple Cubarsí-Íñigo Martínez, Araujo keeps a bullet in the chamber to facilitate his departure.
This new clause would be beneficial for the Uruguayan defender, but also for the clubsince the player’s sale price will always be higher (if his performance is maintained) than what he could have obtained this winter or next summer, since he was going to become a free agent in 2026.
In any case, Barcelona did not want to publicize the new clause stipulated in the contract so as not to attract the attention of other big clubs interested in the Uruguayan defender.. Barça trusts in Ronald Araujo as a future asset and hopes that he will become one of the leaders of Hansi Flick’s team, which is why a sale is not being considered in the short term.
